Roguelike puzzle game sequel

Tenebra 2 is a free puzzle game for PC from an indie developer by the name of Haplo. It is the official sequel to the popular roguelike puzzler for classic Commodore systems called Tenebra. Just like its predecessor, it boasts 8-bit pixel graphics and a dark and atmospheric presentation.

Compared to the first Tenebra game, Tenebra 2 introduces a bunch of new gameplay elements, with the inclusion of a futuristic weapon for players to try out to make the experience more fun. It's compatible with the Commodore 64 and Commodore Plus4 systems and supports both PAL and NTSC standards.

Afraid of the dark

Tenebra is a fun little indie puzzle roguelike with a black-and-white pixel aesthetic. In it, you control a hapless no-name protagonist looking for a way out of a maze-like dungeon. There's a catch, though. He's afraid of the dark and can only move around lit areas. You have to utilize torches and other objects around you to guide him out while avoiding threats and dangers.

Tenebra 2 is the sequel to that game, and it builds upon the solid foundation set by its predecessors. This new entry introduces 35 new levels to go through. Just like the original, you will need to navigate dimly-lit levels with limited light sources. Locate keys required to unlock each door, and solve puzzles in the form of traps and hidden passages along the way.

Also, just like the original, levels are randomly generated, and they are a bit larger than before. Aside from that, you still have the same simple yet fun gameplay. The game is still relatively short despite the increased number of levels. Depending on how you play, you can expect a runtime of anywhere from a few minutes to about an hour—your mileage will vary.

Light the way out

Overall, Tenebra 2 is a worthwhile sequel that improves upon its predecessor in subtle ways. There are more and bigger levels to go through, and its charming pixel graphics and goofy main characters make a return here. It could still use more levels to extend the gameplay even further, but aside from that, this is just a fun and solid game all around.

PROS

  • 35 new randomly generated levels
  • Minimalistic black and white art style
  • Simple yet fun gameplay

CONS

  • Still relatively short gameplay
